About Hannie

I play full-time in the Victoria Symphony in British Columbia, and have held positions in the Bellingham Festival of Music, Symphony Tacoma, and New Jersey Festival Orchestra, among others. I have won awards in solo and chamber music (notably 1st place in the 2017 Edvard Grieg Society of Minnesota String Competition), built successful freelance careers in the New York City, Minneapolis/St. Paul, and Seattle areas, and have traveled from North and South America to Scandinavia and Europe playing violin. I truly believe starting music as a child was the best decision I ever made; it connected me to all the best people and experiences in my life and shaped me into the person I am today!

I earned my master’s degree at Manhattan School of Music in 2023, where I studied with Sheryl Staples of the New York Philharmonic. I received my Bachelor of Music from St. Olaf College in 2019, where I studied with Dr. Francesca Anderegg and toured domestically and internationally for four years under the baton of Maestro Steven Amundson. I led the St. Olaf Orchestra onstage at Carnegie Hall and on tour in Norway as concertmaster.

When I am not at rehearsal, a concert, a wedding gig, or practicing, I enjoy spending time outside or staying in watching movies with my fiancé.

About the lesson

I focus on proper technique to avoid injury and fatigue, prioritize my students’ personal goals, and inspire expression and creativity in every lesson. I believe that the best teachers are still learning, and the best students learn to become their own teacher. I love to build a mutually productive relationship with each of my students!

In the year after I finished my master's degree at Manhattan School of Music, I won three orchestral auditions. Auditions for orchestras and schools put a player’s physical and mental ability to the test, and I love to share the successful approaches I took in my own auditions.

For beginners, I find the most effective method for each student by using a mix of music and books. I pull from the Suzuki method for some students, but can also teach students to read music as they learn the instrument. I have worked with beginners of all ages with a variety of objectives.

Of course, most students fall somewhere in between beginning and taking auditions. I always encourage my intermediate students to be actively working on a variety of music, from scale methods and etudes to sonatas, concertos and solo Bach. I look forward to meeting you and working with you toward your musical goals!
