About Karisa
I am an Experimental Psychologist (Ph.D.) with a passion for teaching applied statistics for students in the behavioural sciences (e.g., psychology, sociology, anthropology, public health, audiology, speech-language pathology, education). Growing up I always gravitated towards books and science - mathematics was never really my "thing" and formulas scared me...but once I started to learn statistics and had real-world applications for these obscure, abstract concepts a whole new world opened up. Then, as my research training took off I fell in love with statistics and the ways data science principles can be used to make sense of human behaviour. I hope to share my nerdy love for statistics with you to help you apply these abstract concepts in real ways.

I believe the best way to learn statistics is by applying it to tangible, real-world situations. Individualized lesson plans will focus on breaking down each statistical concept into 4 parts: 1) theory & why we use this statistic, 2) formula and/or code, 3) application to different examples, and 4) interpretation and reporting, with most of the time dedicated to parts 1 & 3. Lessons and examples will be adapted based on each student's personal interests and comfort with mathematics (it's not for all of us!).
Standard topics include: descriptive statistics (mean, median, mode, skew, standard deviation, outliers), probability, standardization (z-scores, t-scores), inferential statistics (t-test, correlation, one-way ANOVA, factorial ANOVA, regression), tables & graphs, and reporting results.
Advanced topics are also available upon request: mixed model regression, logistic regression, multi-level/hierarchical modeling, epidemiological data, or clinical research analysis.
