About Billy
I’m a TEFL (120-hour) certified tutor with a background in teaching, safeguarding and arts communications. With over 15 years’ experience teaching and working in the Irish arts sector, I understand both the creative and administrative realities that artists face.
I support artists and arts workers in communicating their work clearly and professionally in English or Irish, particularly for applications, statements, portfolios and interviews. While I can’t guarantee funding outcomes, I can help ensure your writing and spoken responses reflect your work as clearly, confidently and effectively as possible.
Alongside my TEFL certification, I hold Safe to Create (arts-sector specific) certification and a BA (Hons.) in Fine Art, with a First Class (Hons.) in Art History.
I've been successful in applying for Arts Council and Local Authority Arts Funding. I've exhibited widely in Ireland and abroad and have developed arts festivals, exhibitions and workshops to foster local engagement with contemporary practices.
In 2024 I was elected as the Communications Officer for Praxis, the Artists' Trade Union of Ireland for a 3-year term.

Who these lessons are for:
I work with artists and arts workers who need support communicating their practice clearly and professionally in English or Irish, particularly for applications, statements, proposals and interviews.
With a 120-hour TEFL certification, I'm particularly well-suited to working with creatives who aren't native English speakers.
I’m Safe to Create trained, having completed sector-specific safeguarding and dignity-at-work training recognized across the Irish arts and creative industries.
Lesson format:
Lessons are one hour long, with follow-up work agreed together based on your goals and the areas we focus on during the session.

Each session is practical, supportive and tailored to your immediate needs.
Lessons typically include:
- Clarifying your ideas and artistic intent through guided discussion
- Developing clear, professional written language suited to the Irish arts context
- Reviewing and refining application text, statements, or portfolio materials
- Expanding sector-specific vocabulary and confidence in speaking about your work
- Feedback focused on clarity, tone, and meeting selection criteria
I don’t offer generic English lessons. Instead, I help you:
- Express complex artistic ideas more clearly
- Understand what assessors are looking for
- Strengthen applications without losing your voice
- Feel confident that you’ve submitted the strongest possible version of your work

Rates and booking information
My hourly rate reflects specialist, one-to-one support tailored to artists and arts workers working in English as an additional language. Sessions focus on clarity, confidence, and professional communication within the Irish arts context.
Lessons are one hour in length. Follow-up work or continued support can be agreed together depending on your goals and timelines.
For longer-term or multi-session support (for example, application development or interview preparation), we can discuss a structured approach over several sessions.
