About Gemma

I am a qualified secondary science teacher with experience teaching KS3, GCSE (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) and A-Level Biology. I am also a former AQA GCSE Biology examiner, which gives me direct insight into how exam papers are marked and what examiners are looking for in high-scoring answers.

Throughout my teaching career, I have supported students of all abilities — from those needing confidence and foundations at KS3 to GCSE students aiming for Grades 5–9 and A-Level students preparing for university applications.

My experience as an examiner means I understand:
• How mark schemes are applied in real exams
• Why students lose marks (even when they “know the content”)
• How to structure extended answers effectively
• How to interpret command words accurately
• How to maximise marks under timed conditions

I believe science should feel clear and manageable, not overwhelming. I focus on breaking down complex ideas into simple, logical steps and building confidence through structured practice and constructive feedback.

Outside of tutoring, I am passionate about helping students develop independent revision skills and long-term study habits that go beyond memorising content.

My goal is not just to improve grades, but to help students feel calm, capable and in control of their learning.

About the lesson

GCSE & A-Level Science Tuition with Examiner Insight

I am a qualified secondary science teacher and a former AQA GCSE Biology examiner. This means I understand exactly how exam papers are marked and what examiners are looking for in high-level answers.

My lessons are structured, clear and focused on improving both understanding and exam performance.

Each session typically includes:
• Clear explanation of key scientific concepts
• Targeted practice questions based on exam board style
• Mark scheme breakdown and modelling of high-scoring answers
• Feedback on how to turn “almost right” answers into full marks
• Exam technique strategies for extended response questions

As an ex-examiner, I help students:
Understand how marks are actually awarded
Avoid common mistakes that lose easy marks
Structure 4- and 6-mark answers effectively
Interpret command words accurately
Improve timing and exam confidence

For KS3 students, I focus on building strong foundations and scientific thinking skills that prepare them for GCSE success.

For A-Level Biology students, I support deeper conceptual understanding and structured essay-style responses.
My aim is not just to revise content, but to build clarity, confidence and exam-ready skills.
