About Lauren

I have been tutoring for over 15 years. I have also worked in primary and secondary schools with children of all abilities, my most recent position was as an intervention tutor in a big comprehensive secondary school where I worked with children with ASD and other special educational needs. I have worked for private tuition centres as a maths and English tutor for many years, including working for two of the largest providers of private tuition currently in the UK. I have experience of teaching children in a class-based setting teaching all National Curriculum subjects.

I have been working as a private home tutor now for many years and often end up working with the same families for many years seeing their children through their education at school. I am extremely dedicated to the wellbeing of every child I teach and the parents of the children I currently work with have received very positive end of year school reports.

I have experience in conducting training for the 11+ examinations and preparing students for their GCSE exams.

I am a mum of three and enjoy playing golf and walking our family dog.

About the lesson

I hold a teaching degree in KS2/KS3 with English and a BA honours degree from Roehampton University in Education. I have completed my postgraduate studies in early years teaching. In 2011 I opened a tuition centre in Battersea where I specialised in teaching maths, English and the 11+ to children of all ages and abilities. The tuition business was very successful and we built a cohort of 100 students a week before selling it in 2019 due to my relocation to Surrey.

I am a really friendly, approachable person who finds it easy to build up a good rapport with people of all ages. One of my goals of private tutoring is to ensure that all children gain enthusiasm and confidence in their learning. I have worked with many children who lack confidence and giving those children a boost in their confidence often brings about a new level of enthusiasm towards the subject and a better understanding.

My first session with a tutee will involve getting to know the individual child and conducting an assessment so that I can see any gaps the child may have. It is important in the first few sessions to build a trusting relationship with the child so that they feel comfortable working with me. From this initial session I will then work with the child with any maths or English support they need. I will prepare worksheets, stories, test papers and other resources for every session as my lessons are tailored to suit the individual child. I usually try to bring to the lesson some interactive learning activities for the younger students as this makes the learning experience fun! Every couple of weeks I try to give each child a short task to do which might involve, for example, in English, writing a diary extract, writing a newspaper article or doing a longer comprehension activity. This continual assessment approach allows me to see how their child is progressing and ensure the lesson structure is the best it can be for that individual child.

Every session is tailored completely to the child and the parents. If a parent wants their child to learn all of their times tables I will incorporate a times table activity into each session until we have reached our target.
