About Ryan

I am a qualified UK teacher, former school leader, exam marker and specialist tutor, and the founder of Ryan Varco Tuition, with more than 12 years’ experience in education.

During my career, I have worked as Head of English, Head of Maths and Head of Key Stage, as well as a curriculum developer and teacher coach. This broad experience gives me a deep understanding of how children learn, how they are assessed and how academic success is built over time.

I now specialise in preparing students for competitive UK independent school entrance examinations, helping families navigate the 7+, 8+, 11+ and 13+ process with a clear and structured preparation strategy.

My work goes beyond individual tutoring sessions. I help families identify priorities, understand the requirements of their target schools and create a strategic preparation pathway, so parents know what their child should be working on, why it matters and what the next steps should be. This reflects my wider approach of combining expert teaching, assessment and long-term planning rather than relying on isolated exam practice.

Students I have supported have secured offers from many of the UK’s leading independent schools, including Eton College, Westminster School, Winchester College, St Paul’s School, St Paul’s Girls’ School, North London Collegiate School, King’s College School Wimbledon, Wycombe Abbey, Brighton College, Sevenoaks School, City of London School and Godolphin and Latymer School.

My aim is not simply to help students pass an entrance examination. I want students to become confident, resilient and independent learners, equipped with the knowledge, strategies and mindset to thrive at their next school and beyond.

About the lesson

Every child’s entrance preparation is different. My one-hour online lessons are therefore carefully tailored to the individual student, their strengths and areas for development, their target schools and the assessments they will face.

I provide specialist preparation for:

• 7+, 8+, 11+ and 13+ entrance examinations
• ISEB Pre-Test
• School-specific entrance assessments
• English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning

I begin by identifying exactly where a student is performing well and where improvement is needed. Lessons then combine focused teaching, clear explanations, carefully selected exam-style practice, proven strategies and targeted feedback.

My teaching is calm, structured and carefully scaffolded. Students are appropriately challenged while being given the support and strategies they need to make meaningful progress without becoming overwhelmed.

Entrance preparation is not simply about completing endless practice papers. I develop the underlying knowledge and reasoning skills students need while teaching them how to manage time, approach unfamiliar questions, analyse mistakes, recognise common traps and perform confidently under examination conditions.

This structured and personalised approach has helped students secure offers from schools including City of London School for Girls, Guildford High School, Lady Eleanor Holles School, South Hampstead High School, Hampton School, Dulwich College, Royal Grammar School Guildford, Whitgift School, Latymer Upper School, Highgate School, Alleyn’s School and Reigate Grammar School.

Most importantly, students understand what they need to improve and how to improve it, developing the confidence, independence and academic skills required for both entrance assessments and future success.
