About Ronin

My name is Ronin, and I'm an undergraduate student at Queen's University. I'm originally from Richmond Hill, Ontario, where I've spent most of my life before moving up here to Kingston. As I stated in my tutoring description, I have been playing guitar for 11 years, and I am very familiar with the process of teaching guitar - I watched my own guitar teacher do so for almost a decade, bringing me from a total beginner to a teacher myself. I have had experience teaching beginner students at Alla Breve Music Academy in Maple, Ontario, where I worked part-time as a supply guitar tutor. Despite the young age of these students, one is truly never to old to pick up guitar. In my experience however, you'll get a lot farther with an experienced teacher to guide you through the process. I hope to hear from you soon!

About the lesson

I started taking lessons when I was 7 years old, and I had the best guitar teacher out there. His strategy for teaching students was to helping them play guitar the way they wanted to, rather than overwhelming them with mundane theory and sheet music right off the bat. That approach worked wonders for me, and since I've started to teach, I'm adopting it with my own students. As a tutor, I focus on teaching skills that apply to the musical interests of each student as individual learners - and advancing those skills as those interests develop. If all you want to learn are three-chord campfire songs, I can teach you to play them, read guitar TABS for them, and eventually to pick them up by ear. Or, If you want to learn to play like Eddie Van Halen in the '80s, I can teach you that too. Guitar players go through phases where different genres and techniques appeal to them. It's important for you to have a guitar teacher who can guide you through any genre, teach those techniques, and most importantly - put your unique goals as a guitarist first. I look forward to being a part of your guitar journey!
