About Sharon

My teaching philosophy for saxophone centers on balancing the technical demands of the instrument with nurturing creative and emotional expression. I start by guiding students through fundamentals such as breath support, embouchure control, finger coordination, and tone production, ensuring they develop a healthy and reliable technique. Beyond technical skills, I focus on helping students interpret music through dynamics, phrasing, articulation, and vibrato, fostering a personal sound and style. Music theory and ear training are introduced through practical application in the music students enjoy, from jazz and blues to classical and pop. Improvisation is woven into lessons early, using structured exercises to build confidence and musical vocabulary. I customize lessons based on each student’s interests and goals, which keeps motivation high and learning relevant. I also incorporate modern tools like apps for slowing down music, backing tracks, and recording software to enhance practice and self-assessment. A highlight of my teaching career was supporting a student preparing for a major jazz festival, where they developed not only technical skills but also stage presence and creative voice. My goal is to provide a learning space where students feel challenged, supported, and free to express themselves musically.

About the lesson

Teaching saxophone to me is about more than just technique; it’s about inspiring students to connect emotionally with music and express their unique personality through the instrument. I emphasize the importance of solid fundamentals—breath control, embouchure, finger agility, tone production, articulation, and rhythm—while encouraging exploration and improvisation to nurture artistic growth.

Each student’s lessons are customized to fit their individual learning style, musical interests, and aspirations, whether that’s performing jazz standards, classical pieces, blues riffs, or contemporary songs. I integrate music theory and ear training seamlessly into the curriculum to enhance understanding and creativity. I also use technology, including recording apps, metronomes, tuners, and backing tracks, to support effective practice and provide clear feedback.

Encouraging performance is a vital part of my teaching philosophy; I help students build confidence and stage presence through recitals, auditions, and live ensembles. A memorable teaching experience was helping a student overcome initial technical struggles and stage fright to become a confident improviser and performer. Ultimately, my goal is to foster technically skilled, confident, and expressive musicians who find joy and fulfillment in their musical journey.
