I believe that one-on-one learning is a collaborative effort between student and teacher, and that flexibility is important. No two students learn in exactly the same way, so it is important to understand what a student's goals are and which teaching methods they respond best to. Something I strive to do is to teach students in a way that is easy to understand, but also encourages self-reflection and critical response, at any age/level.
My go-to method book is the RCM Celebration Series. For younger students who are just beginning their journey at the piano, I also like to use method books from the Alfred's and Hal Leonard series for a fun and inviting approach to music. I am completely open to working on any material that a student may bring in themselves!
I am a post-secondary student currently studying to become a developmental service worker. I received my Associate's Diploma in Piano Performance under the RCM here in Canada a few years ago and have had the opportunity to work with students of all different ages, different levels of experience at the piano, and different goals with music. I have been working towards getting my teaching certificates under the RCM at all levels (Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced) and learning to become the most effective and knowledgeable teacher that I can.
