About Elijah

I am a 22 year old recent graduate who has only been out of school for a handful of years themselves I believe that gives me the ability to connect with young adults on a personal level while tutoring. I believe that a somewhat more casual and friendly environment than that provided by a classroom, with someone who still has the GCSE period of their life fresh in their mind can be extremely beneficial when it comes to learning and absorbing knowledge. At GCSE I received an A* in physics (with the Pearson Edexcel exam board), and an A in maths (with the AQA exam board). I then took both these subjects at A-Level, since then I have received my Mechanical Engineering degree. I have 2 years volunteering experience with providing physics lessons to primary school age children and since completing my degree have successfully tutored 6 separate clients with 5 at GCSE Level and 1 at A-level. I believe that everybody learns differently and it is my job to get to know the student and figure out what style of learning works best, whether that be a more casual hands off approach where I act only as an advisor as they go through their work mostly independently, or a more interactive hands on approach where I prepare study aids and get very involved with the work being done as we have a much more dialogue and questions going back and forth. My primary concern is to allow the student to flourish using whatever method they deem best for them.

About the lesson

I offer lessons anywhere between 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on your needs. I provide online tutoring for both years 10 & 11. I also offer tutoring to year 9 students to increase their knowledge up to GCSE level to provide them with a head start on their course. While I am most familiar with AQA and Edexcel examinations I tutor for all exam boards. A typical tutoring session with me consists of me and the student working through extra material such as exam papers, textbook questions, online worksheets etc. that will help them test and deepen their understanding of the topics they cover in school. I also help provide feedback and corrections on homework or tests that the student has submitted in class. My style of tutoring involves helping the student come to their own conclusions and find their own answers within their work rather than just simply walking them through how to solve their own work. I do this by highlighting how to structure an answer, by reminding students of their own prior knowledge and resources and then using these to nudge them in the correct direction. I also place emphasis on how most topics are connected and knowledge of one topic can be used in their current work to help themselves solve it. The sessions will consist of increasing the general understanding of a topic that the student is struggling with or simply wishes to know more about. This could take the form of explaining more abstract ideas presented in classrooms through real world examples of their use to allow the student to better connect with the material, or reducing more complex ideas down to simpler and easier to grasp explanations by spending more time working through the concept that is not available in a normal school timetable.

I justify my pricing for a variety of reasons, and these include but are not limited to that I custom create my own work to stretch and develop my students to meet their individual learning requirements, my 2 years of experience in the industry, and my academic degree in engineering that gives me the professional skills to complete this role to an exemplary level. I am also proud to say that I now have a client base of 6 students who have all left positive reviews and have all returned for multiple terms of study.
