About Wlodek

So, the system is asking me to tell you who I am. From your point of view I am a kind and experienced teacher who served the students and supported them when necessary as college principal for a decade. I am highly qualified and have published in Nature and Science journals, but this is less important for you than my ability to listen to you, to explain things at your pace, to identify and deal with any hurdles in your learning journey. And if I don't know things right away, I will tell you and we will look for the answers together.

My students always saw me as approachable, caring and helpful, as well as passionate about what I taught. I taught classes of various sizes for over 25 years and had individual tutorials for those who had difficulties or had missed the classes. I retired recently and teaching is the main part of my job that I now miss.

My Master's degree is in control engineering, my PhD was about mathematical modelling of a complex biological system. Both of these degrees required a good knowledge and ability to use mathematics and to communicate it. My work in a science department involved translation of the problem between the application area and mathematical models, applying the models, and then translating the results back into a discipline of natural science. In school mathematics translation of the problem into a formula is often an important step in its solution.

Photography is my serious hobby, and you will find my images on Flickr. I am a learner - for many years I have been attempting to learn to play saxophone, but lack of time and life got in the way of practicing, so I am hoping that my retirement will allow me to continue my musical education. I have grown-up children who have been very successful in their careers so far, but that's a credit to them, not to me. Free time? What's that? Whatever is left of my time is taken by our dog, a three-legged energetic and happy wooly character rescued from a far-away land with the help of a UK charity.

You may be surprised that I am not offering tutorials at A-levels and above - this is because I believe that the levels of confidence in mathematics amongst the school pupils need to be built up. Too many times I heard. "I am not good at maths." from my students at degree level. This is something I want to address.

About the lesson

I listen and address the sticking points using examples from the student's class and from any available materials. The focus is always on clarity of explanation, on addressing your specific needs, and on improving your understanding and confidence through solving multiple example problems.

Working on the skill of reading the questions, and of translation between the text and the formulae will help you to answer your future exam questions and your work on the homework.

You will need to ask me questions, I will ask you too - even just formulating the questions, identifying the hurdles is a very important step in building your self-awareness and confidence.
