I like to get students to talk about their passions. I try to gear my program to their passions and have some fun too! There are several books to refer to, but there wouldn’t be books in class, Perhaps a short article would be handed out, and several questions posed...not only comprehension questions, but also opinions would be nurtured.
Teacher-student rapport is quickly developed in my classes. I know a few words in several languages , so once I establish which country my students come from, I would address them in their language. Sometimes it’s a short interaction,, however if the students have some English skills, then I explain my time in their country.
