About Guillermo

I graduated with a BS in applied math from The Ohio State University, but I soon realized I was a person's person, not a machine or lab lover. Thus, I switched my life direction and joined the Florida International University Developmental Psychology PhD program, where I became a certified behavior analyst. I went to work with special populations. My job consisted of training parents, teachers, and experts to improve their work with their clients. I developed other programs with normal populations, such as teaching insecure children to thrive socially, and help deaf adults communicate with developmentally delayed adults.
For many years I developed educational and physical programs for special populations. Each program was uniquely adapted to the skills and limitations of the trainee, as well as the skills and limitations of the trainers. The trainers were teachers, speech therapists, physical therapists, musicians, and karate and yoga instructors. Some of these trainers were very high-level in their fields, like Jimmy Wong, three time World Champion in karate.
I always adapt to my student's needs to offer them what is best for them.

ADHD is a disorder only because when mismanaged, it results in poor performance and many misbehaviors. Because of this, teachers become impatient with the child, and often, decide that the child is a lost case. I am painfully aware of this because I was a hyperactive, attention deficit child at a time when the diagnostic did not exist. Luckily, I was a very fast learner and got good grades in spite of my misbehaviors and recklessness.
In fact, I ended up getting better grades than most other non ADHD children. I figured out that my ADHD was really an asset. Being hyperactive meant I did not get tired. I could go on when everyone else was exhausted. I realized that without extra physical activities, I was restless. Then, I found karate. I loved karate and practiced two hours per day and still had energy for much more. In fact, I continued practicing karate until much later in life, a heart attack prevented me from continuing.
I have helped many children to stop taking Ritalin by teaching them to love a sport. Running, basketball, soccer, etc are very helpful when you are hyperactive. And there is really no way to develop good school habits until your hyperactivity gets under control.
Once hyperactivity is controlled, attention deficit is very manageable. A gradual increase in the time the child is on task and a gradual reduction of breaks can easily bring attention spans from under 40 seconds to several minutes. With additional behavior techniques, attention can be brought to several hours. Even more, with more advanced techniques, a learner can go from having difficulty concentrating in one subject, to concentrating on several subjects in a single session.
