About Michael
I am a retired Grammar School Maths Teacher with over 1000 hours private tutoring. My tuition is tailored to meet the needs of each student. I primarily provide maths tuition from secondary entrance level upwards to cover 11+, 13+, common entrance and scholarship then Key stage 3, 4 and 5, i.e. GCSE, iGCSE, A-level and both high and standard level IB.
My approach to tutoring maths is to encourage and motivate the pupil. I lead them through topics they find difficult or complex so that they develop the knowledge and confidence to tackle challenging questions. I achieve this by breaking multi-stage problems into bite size chunks that they are able to solve. This process simplifies complex, abstract problems. It is critical that students have the time and the space to ask questions about each concept so that they have a clear understanding of each part of the syllabus.
I find the most enjoyable part of tutoring is watching the progress pupils can make and their increase in motivation & self-confidence. The provision of one to one attention provides the mechanism for them to develop the ability to solve those difficult questions they struggle with at school. A good working relationship is an important factor.
I Graduated from Cambridge University with a M.A. and a M.Eng. in Chemical Engineering. I then had a successful career as an engineer and manager in the Oil and Gas Industry for 33 years. On leaving the industry, I trained as a Maths teacher to obtain my QTS. I have taught Maths at both a Boys Grammar and a Girls Grammar at all levels including sixth form. I have been able to use my industry experience to provide practical real world examples.

Mike Cast has an instinctive understanding of maths which allows him to offer students a range of approaches to topics. He has a calm, patient nature which puts students at ease and builds confidence, but is always well prepared and organised. Above all he has an infectious enthusiasm for the subject.
