“Once upon a time, there was a quadrilateral named Mr. Square. He tried to find someone with 4 right angles parallel and equal sides to share his life with. One day, he happened to notice a cute little quadrilateral. Her sides were all equal and parallel but she didn’t have right angles. It didn’t matter to him, he was so smitten with her, he asked her to marry him. They lived a happy life in Polygon and soon were expecting their own little quadrilateral. She was born an adorable parallelogram. One day, Para was swinging and…….”
The excerpt above is from a story that I made up to explain to my students about the differences between the various quadrilaterals. I have been tutoring math since I was 16 years old. I helped several of my fellow students and started own math tutoring business. I taught elementary school with an emphasis on mathematics for 43 years.

About the lesson

I use the I do, we do, you do method. I generally start a lesson with showing and explaining what to do. Then, I have the student do a problem or two with me going over the concepts as we go. Lastly, I give the students several problems, varying in increasing difficulty to solve. I have several songs, stories, and phrases to help students remember the different concepts and how to complete different problems. I try to put the humor back in math. I like my students to show all their work in a logical progression. I have a good concept of where the students may have learning gaps and how to bridge these gaps, so that they have a good foundation in basic math skills and critical thinking that sets them up for future success in math.
