About Risa

I am a recent graduate from the University of California, San Diego, where I earned my Bachelor of Science in Human Biology. Having successfully balanced a rigorous, fast-paced science curriculum at a top-tier university with athletics and other extracurriculars, I understand exactly what it takes to perform under pressure and manage multiple commitments. My background in biology, chemistry, and mathematics gives me a deep, foundational knowledge of the material I teach, and allows me to better assist in my non-memorization learning approach.

As an educator, my priority is to simplify complex subjects and help students develop long-term academic independence. I approach tutoring with the patience, structure, and high energy of a coach. Whether a student is aiming to master a difficult AP science course, improve foundational math skills, or learn better study habits to manage a heavy workload, I provide a professional, highly encouraging, and structured environment to help them reach their goals confidently.

My Approach to Tutoring:
As a recent UC San Diego Human Biology graduate and competitive collegiate athlete, my approach to teaching combines rigorous academic focus with the encouragement and discipline of an athletic coach. I don’t believe in dry memorization. Because science and math are inherently visual and conceptual, I break down complex mechanisms—like cellular pathways or algebraic functions—using real-world analogies and examples. I focus heavily on building academic confidence, teaching students how to study smarter, analyze problems critically, and overcome test anxiety.

A Typical Lesson Plan:

-The Warm-Up (5–10 Mins): We review core concepts from the previous week or tackle immediate sticking points from current homework assignments.

-Active Conceptual Learning (20–25 Mins): Introduction of new material using interactive problem-solving, custom diagrams, or step-by-step logic modeling rather than just reading from a textbook.

-Guided Practice (15–20 Mins): The student takes the lead on practice problems while I provide real-time feedback, helping them refine their technique and catch minor errors before exams.

-Cool-Down & Strategy (5 Mins): We wrap up by summarizing the key takeaways and mapping out a clear action plan for their independent study before our next session.

What Sets Me Apart:
What sets me apart is my ability to connect with students as both an academic peer and a high-energy mentor. Having balanced a demanding Human Biology curriculum at a top-tier university while competing in collegiate sports, I have mastered time management, performance under pressure, and goal-setting. I will bring that exact same drive, patience, and structured focus to my students, ensuring they feel supported rather than overwhelmed by difficult STEM coursework.

My lessons are specifically designed for:

-Middle & High School Students: Anyone navigating general sciences, algebra, geometry, or preparing for high-stakes AP Biology and AP Chemistry courses.
