About Alex
I began learning Sanskrit on my own during high school; ultimately I received a BA in the language from Brown University, where I trained under James Fitzgerald, a leading authority on the Mahābhārata, and David Buchta, a specialist in devotional poetry and Pāṇinian grammar. My doctoral research was supervised by Stephanie Jamison, a leading authority in Vedic language and literature. Recently I have taught elementary and advanced Sanskrit courses at Brown University. Outside of Sanskrit, my primary specialization, I have substantial training in and working knowledge of several related languages, chiefly Hindi/Urdu, Old and Middle Persian, Avestan, Latin, and Ancient Greek.

Lessons are catered to students’ needs and experience; all levels are welcome. I will be glad to guide students through the basics of the language or through reading texts in the original. I draw on many existing resources (spanning over a century of publication) and readily adapt existing materials for improved legibility, clarity, and relevance to students’ specific interests. To the extent that it is useful and relevant, I supplement presentations of grammar and vocabulary with discussion of related languages that I have also studied (Hindi/Urdu, various Iranian languages, Latin, Greek).

Perfect! Alex understands my desire to acquire an understanding of Sanskrit and Hinduism as a Classical Languages major. I've never otherwise met someone who can relate to that feeling, so, I'm extremely encouraged!
