About Evan

Hey, I am Evan Kuhnert, a Canadian screen composer, systematic musicologist, and classically trained saxophonist based just outside of Edmonton in Sherwood Park. I graduated from The King's University in 2024 with a degree in music and I want to play my part in raising up the next generation of saxophonists. As a saxophonist I have performed in jazz bands, concert bands, worship bands, many small ensembles and certainly as a solo performer for many years. One year I was even invited to be a performer at the NASA saxophone conference.

Through my many years as a saxophonist I have experienced many flaws in commonly practiced teaching methods. So many students are never truly taught how to practice, and therefore practicing becomes frustrating and tedious. They end up resorting to playing music that is fun to play but ultimately does not contribute to their growth as a musician. Knowing how to "play" and knowing how to "practice" are completely different, and practicing does not have to be a chore at all. With the right methods, practicing not only becomes efficient and rewarding but fun. I also strongly believe that students need to be taught how to teach themselves. I want to prepare my students with such useful self-sufficient skills, that they no longer need a teacher.

There is so much more I can say but I should leave it at that before this turns into a rant.

About the lesson

I offer predominantly private in-home lessons for motivated students of all ages who are committed to developing their skills. I teach using a structured methodology that builds skills progressively while instilling the theoretical understanding that is the backbone of a confident, adaptable musician.

With formal university training, many years of professional lessons, over 10 years of ensemble experience, and more than 7 years of solo saxophone performance, my lessons emphasize:
- Strong technical foundations that support continuous, tension free musical development.
- Refined tone production and a precise, internalized musical intonation.
- Integration of theoretical understanding directly into performance.
- Artistic identity and expressive individuality.
- Training in self-diagnosis, effective practice methods, and personal accountability.

My standard rate is $55 per 60-minute lesson, with a travel surcharge which depends on the location. That being said, I offer a free first lesson and a reduced introductory rate for the first few lessons to assess the student's skill level and establish a structured lesson plan.
