About Ian
I have taught pupils of all ages for over fifteen years and have worked as a freelance Musician in Orchestras, bands and as a soloist.
I have a full and clear DBS certificate, and teach from a well equipped home studio.
I take a tailored approach to every student, recommending specific music, studies and tutoring material to their level and interests.

Playing music is exhilarating, challenging, therapeutic and an incredible skill to be enjoyed throughout life. Learning to play should be a joy, and choosing a great teacher is the key.
Ian is an experienced tutor of saxophone and guitar. He teaches all ages and stages from absolute beginner through to grade 8+ from his spacious and well equipped home studio in Crystal Palace, London as well as online.
LESSONS
Your own expression is the most important building block when forming your musical identity. Ian looks to encourage and explore this with students through carefully chosen music, improvisation, composition, duets, playing with others and expressive music making. Ian tailors lessons around your interests and needs, taking care to give weight and time to problem areas, or particular interests.
Ian's studio in Crystal Palace is well equipped and comfortable. Usually all that is required from the student is their instrument and a willingness to learn. The studio is a short walk from Crystal Palace station or Anerley Station. There is also a parking space available.

TECHNIQUE
Having honed his technique at Guildhall School of Music and Drama and with many years playing professionally, Ian offers excellent tuition to the beginner through to the advanced player. For the beginner this means that you are able to begin learning on your instrument, safe in the knowledge that you are building correct classically honed technique right from the start, which will help you to overcome stumbling blocks later in your journey.
The time between lessons with Ian is as important as the lesson itself. At the end of every session you will leave with clear excercises and practice schedules to give you structure through practice sessions in the week.
ABOUT
Ian is registered with the ABRSM, and can take students through grade exams if that is of interest, though this isn't a necessity.
Having studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama under Christian Forshaw and John Harle, Ian went on to be awarded an artistic fellowship of the Guildhall in 2011. As part of the Kaleidoscope saxophone quartet he went on to win a number of awards including the Maisie Lewis award and the Guildhall Launchpad Prize. Kaleidoscope Saxophone Quartet were also City Music Foundation selected artists in 2015.
