About Elizabeth

I have a Masters Degree in Public Administration and two HR certifications that were all achieved 2013-2014.

I started my first HR position at a nonprofit as an HR Generalist. Within 5 years I’d move up to become the Director of HR at the same company.

I moved on to another Director position for a similar nonprofit, but on a much bigger scale. Also, this position was brand new for the organization so I was tasked with having to build my department from the ground.

I’d eventually move on to corporate where I took a step-back to manager, but I knew it wouldn’t be long before I was back up at the Director level. 19 months later I was promoted to Director of a multi-state organization, where I still am working today.

Apart from receiving formal education for the PHR exam, I am completely self taught (and self struggled) to be where I am today. There were often many times I wish I had a mentor or someone with more experience to guide me throughout my career. I’ve never had the experience of working under a seasoned HR professional.
However, had I not begun by learning from my colleagues in that PHR class, I have no doubt it would have taken me a lot longer to get my first HR opportunity and especially to get me to the Director level so quickly.

I’d love the opportunity to assist others in ways I wish I had the support, early on in my HR career.

About the lesson

In 2013 I received both my PHR & SHRM-CP with zero HR experience.

For the PHR, I attended a 6 month class at a local community college to help me study and learn the material for the exam. However, I received so much more than that.

I started my quest to receive that certification with zero HR experience. I had no experience to correlate with the material I was reading; thus making it harder for me to remember the info. My colleagues that were in my class provided great examples of real life scenarios which actually helped me with the exam. Their real life scenarios were absolutely invaluable to me and very impressionable.

I’d like the opportunity to give back to those who were like me back then; trying to earn a certificate with no real-life experience.

Additionally, I’d like to impart my knowledge to others who may need a little extra support in their HR journey.
