About Kim

About me

I grew up in Australia and trained as an architect there, spending over a decade in Sydney studios before starting my own practice. A few years ago I moved to Barcelona, where I now run that practice remotely while learning Spanish and adjusting to a very different pace of life.

Architecture school gave me some of the hardest and best years of my working life. I remember standing in front of a crit panel with a half-formed idea, and I remember how much it helped when someone actually explained why something wasn't working yet, rather than just saying it wasn't there.

Why I want to teach

I've spent fifteen years being the person other architects come to when a scheme isn't resolving. I've realized I enjoy that part of the job as much as the design work itself, maybe more.

Teaching feels like a natural extension of that. Students are often working through the exact questions I once sat with, why a plan feels awkward, how to defend a decision under pressure, how to turn a rough idea into something that holds together. I like being the steady, honest voice in that process.

Outside architecture I spend my time hiking, working with ceramics, and slowly building a life in a new country and language. Being a beginner again has made me more patient with someone else's learning curve.

About the lesson

Each session is built around whatever you bring to the table, a project you’re stuck on, a portfolio piece that isn’t quite landing, or a review coming up that you want to prepare for.

We’ll usually start by looking at your work together, screen share works well for this, and I’ll ask questions the way a crit panel would, why this move, what’s driving this decision, what happens if you push it further. From there we work through it together, sometimes sketching alternatives, sometimes just talking through the logic until it clicks.

If it’s software support you need instead, ArchiCAD, we’ll work directly in your file so what you learn applies straight to your actual project, not a generic exercise.

Lessons are flexible in length depending on what you need, a quick portfolio check-in or a longer deep dive before a big deadline. I’ll always give honest feedback, the kind that’s actually useful before a deadline, not just encouragement for its own sake.
