I know how difficult it is to have a 1 dimensional teacher. Everyone learns in different ways, so the student's current knowledge, comfort, strengths and weaknesses are the major factors in planning my lessons.
For example, I worked with people who were uncomfortable with Y13 Organic Chemistry content, and we were able to work together to ensure total understanding - by pinpointing exactly where the miscomprehension is, it can be fixed and strengthened more efficiently.
Typically, I would start with an exam question appropriate to the topic - be it a 6 mark question, or a mathematical problem. This helps get a brief understanding of strengths and weaknesses - does the student not know the content? Do they not understand what the question requires?
Having found this, we would discuss the problem and work on ways to solve it - through worked examples, alternative explanations of content and specific question and answer segments.
I would then repeat the question, along with similar questions, to apply the new learning.
