About John
I have been working in an art school as an environmentalist since 2013, and in the environmental sector for 25 years. My degrees are in rural development, global development management, and I have a Pg Certificate in teaching . This background gives me the ability to see the wider picture in a variety of subject areas in the arts and science, and to help apply ethics, environmental and social aspects to any subject.
I recognise the need to adapt and change our society and systems to be designed around nature, not just for profit. I see the links with social justice, and the relevance of all subjects to tackle climate change. Art has a power to communicate the need for change, and design can help us find better and fairer ways of living.
We need engineers, business people, geologists, historians, psychologists - everyone to help address our global crises.
We must recognise that life is a balance, and that everything we do has impacts - at the same time, we need to stay close to the issue we are studying, and look for real solutions.

Every subject area can help tackle climate change and integrate with social justice issues like gender, race and class. Mine is a psycho-social approach to understanding our power in whatever subject area to make positive and meaningful change.
We will explore your practice and study, examine the reasons why we don't take more action on climate change or see the links back to social justice issues. And we will find a positive way of working within your chosen subject using these issues as a tool to expand and improve your studies and future job prospects.
Our Climate Anxiety, or distress, is a key factor, and we'll be looking at how to connect and use our emotions in ways that support us.
In the first lesson we'll explore what is possible, and create a plan going forward. You'll receive reading lists and links to resources to deepen and broaden your knowledge, and achieve a higher level of impact in your work.
