About Stepan

Over 12 years continuous swimming teaching experience ranging from toddlers to all NPTS (National Plan for Teaching Swimming) stages. These are the Beginners to Honours certificates taught mainly to school age swimmers. I also teach adults from beginners to advanced.
I have a reputation for getting non swimmers swimming relatively quickly by first increasing their confidence of simply being in the water.
Accomplished at stroke analysis and improvement of stroke technique for swimming students who may be stuck at a particular stage of NPTS, I can convey what may seem like complex technique instructions in a way that can be easily broken down to understand and implement.
In this Covid 19 environment I am available to consider 1 to 1 teaching in private pools for those (a) lucky enough to have them and (b) not happy with returning to a crowded group swimming lesson environment.
WABBA qualified gym instructor
I am a also qualified gym instructor with personal training experience and can offer and supervise individually tailored training programmes for fitness, strength increase, and basic bodybuilding for men and women and advise on correct use of exercise equipment in gyms, explaining which exercises are most beneficial, and which are pointless or even harmful, based on understanding of the relationship between anatomy and exercise as learnt in the WABBA programme.

About the lesson

I concentrate on submersion and flotation first and have come to understand over the years that being comfortable just floating and putting ones face in the water is the foundation for everything else in terms of swimming development. Focusing on "can do" rather than assuming "can't do" from the outset is vital. Asking someone whether they can float gives them the option to say no. Telling them they can, but they just need a little instruction on how to do what they already can do before trying to, more often than not gets the desired result. I have a reputation for getting child and adult complete beginners to being basic swimmers sometimes inside half an hour simply by explaining the same principles of flotation, then telling them swimming is something they most probably didn't know they could do, rather than take their statement that they are non swimmers at face value. To do that is to "buy into" their (in most cases) mistaken perception of themselves based on perhaps one unsuccessful attempt at some point in their lives. All that said, there are also water phobic people of all ages due to previous bad experiences in water, and here more patience, setting smaller incremental steps, resorting to flotation aids and again, patient understanding along with actual teaching experience, all come together to play their part. Lessons provided at pools arranged by student who has arranged pool owner's permission prior to contacting me.
