Objective:
Students will enhance their acting skills through virtual improvisation exercises, character development, and scene work.
Materials Needed:
Internet-enabled device with video and audio capabilities
Virtual meeting platform (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Teams)
Scripts or scene excerpts (if applicable)
Digital whiteboard or shared document (optional)
Props or costume pieces (optional)
Warm-Up (10 minutes):
Virtual Physical Warm-Up:
Activity: "Virtual Stretch and Energizer"
Purpose: To loosen up and prepare for performance.
Instructions: Lead students through a series of stretches and simple physical exercises that can be done in their space. Encourage them to stand up, stretch, and move around their area. Use visual and verbal cues to guide them through the exercises.
Virtual Vocal Warm-Up:
Activity: "Online Tongue Twisters and Vocal Exercises"
Purpose: To improve diction and projection.
Instructions: Share a list of tongue twisters or vocal exercises on the screen. Have students practice them aloud, focusing on clarity and volume. You can also use the breakout room feature for students to practice in pairs if the platform allows.
Main Activity (30 minutes):
Online Improvisation Exercise (15 minutes):
Activity: "Digital Instant Scenes"
Purpose: To encourage creativity and spontaneity in a virtual setting.
Instructions: Use the breakout room feature (if available) to divide students into pairs or small groups. Give them a random prompt or scenario via chat (e.g., “A video call where everything goes wrong”). Allow them 5 minutes to prepare and then come back to the main room to perform their scene. Offer feedback and discuss each performance briefly.
Character Development (15 minutes):
Activity: "Virtual Monologues"
Purpose: To develop depth and authenticity in character portrayal.
Instructions: Ask students to select a monologue or character from a script they have. They can perform it directly or read it aloud. After each performance, provide feedback and suggestions for improving their portrayal, focusing on emotions and physicality even through the screen.
Scene Work (15 minutes):
Activity: "Scene Rehearsal and Performance"
Purpose: To practice and apply acting skills in a structured setting.
Instructions: Assign a short scene or excerpt from a play. Use breakout rooms for students to rehearse in pairs or groups. After rehearsal, reconvene in the main room for performances. Offer feedback on each scene and facilitate a discussion about the performance, highlighting areas of strength and potential improvement.
Cool Down and Reflection (5 minutes):
Activity: "Virtual Reflection Circle"
Purpose: To consolidate learning and address questions.
Instructions: Have students share their thoughts on the day’s activities via a group chat or discussion. Encourage them to talk about what they learned, enjoyed, or found challenging. Answer any questions they might have and offer positive reinforcement.
Homework/Assignments:
Activity: "Character Exploration Assignment"
Purpose: To continue character development outside of class.
Instructions: Ask students to create a character profile, including background, motivations, and a key conflict. They should also prepare a short monologue or scene for the next class that showcases this character. They can submit their work via email or a shared document.
Notes for the Tutor:
Ensure that all students have their cameras and microphones working before starting the class.
Use screen sharing to display scripts, prompts, or feedback.
Be mindful of screen fatigue; keep activities varied and interactive.
Provide clear instructions and support to help students navigate the online format.
