About Tess

Tess is the founder of It Takes Two: Body Doubling for Teens. Her experience as an educator has included: teaching Latin and English, working as an Exceptional Student Services Assistant and 504 Coordinator, and conducting private academic tutoring and executive function coaching. No matter the setting, her priority is to develop a positive, meaningful relationship with her students as they progress through their academic journey.

Tess is an advocate for the neurodiversity movement. Her passion for working with those with ADHD and executive dysfunction developed when she was a 504 Coordinator in charge of creating plans to ensure curriculum accessibility. Later, as an executive function coach, she began to recognize the limitations of 504s and IEPs. She found that her clients knew how to break down assignments into manageable pieces, a frequent accommodation of 504s and IEPs, but what they struggled with most was task initiation. Lacking task initiation skills, her clients' overdue assignments piled up, leading them to feelings of shame, anxiety, or anger towards themselves. This often brought about a vicious cycle. It was only when she began to include body doubling into her sessions that she saw her clients start and finish their assignments, even those that they dreaded most.

Now she wants to provide that same success to your student through body doubling + troubleshooting.

Are you frequently frustrated by your middle or high school student's lack of task initiation and problem solving?

These may be signs of executive dysfunction.

Our take on body doubling provides a solution.

What Is Body Doubling

Body doubling has started to gain traction in the past few years for individuals with ADHD or executive dysfunction. Body doubling is when a student completes their work in the presence of someone else in a calm environment. A pretty simple concept, right? However, it addresses one of the most challenging executive functions - task initiation.

Task initiation is an executive function more complex than people assume. Many individuals with ADHD or executive dysfunction have a complete understanding of what they need get done, but express that there is a mental block when it comes to getting started. For middle and high school students, this may result in getting behind in assignments, resulting in poor grades. In worst case scenarios, teachers or parents begin to believe or verbalize that the student is lazy or not trying their best which can lead the student to feelings of shame, anxiety, depression, or negative self-image.

Body doubling creates an environment in which the students feels supported and able to maintain greater sustained focus, another crucial executive function. They often realize that the hardest part is getting started, but once they start they are able to finish.

What We Do

Students who join our services get all of the benefits of body doubling plus extra support. In body doubling + troubleshooting, students are able to interact with the online session monitor whenever they run into a roadblock while completing their homework/essays/projects - whatever they decide to work on in that given session. Through questioning and encouragement, the session monitor guides the student to find their own solution. This develops flexible thinking skills and provides them with tools to use in the future.

Students meet in small groups of no more than six with a session monitor via Zoom. Students mics will be muted and chat features from student-to-student will be disabled; students will only be able to send chat messages to the session monitor. When students need to troubleshoot with the session monitor, they have the option to do so via the chat feature or face-to-face in a breakout room. It is highly encouraged that students choose the work that they least want to do in order to have greater support to complete it during the session.

Who We Serve

We went to make clear that this is not a tutoring service. We do not provide specific academic remediation. Instead, we provide accountability and troubleshooting to help students complete their work, gain confidence, and develop a better understanding of their abilities.

Students who best benefit from body doubling:
Students with ADHD
Students with academic-related anxiety
