I taught 9 subjects over13 years in 6 states (3-12): Reading (Speed and Remedial), Speech, Am Literature, Grammar, Study Skills, Civics, Biology, Geography.
Then I wrote a syndicated newspaper and online Q&A teen column (“Adolessons”) for18 years publishing 8000 letters. Skills: persuasive and expository writing, research, grammar, online posting.

About the lesson

As primarily a high school teacher, I found that kind sarcasm worked well to discipline students.
I am a very kind and flexible teacher who enjoys “guiding” students through learning.
My favorite and most effective teaching technique was the Socratic method. Students appreciated drawing conclusions themselves to learn rather than just taking notes.
I chose to use assertive techniques by employing a point system for assignments.
I also used the point system for discipline.
In both uses, students were responsible for their work and behavior. Their point total was a fraction of their grade.
I had no need to take time reminding or disciplining students in front of class.
All assignments were kept on the board serving as reminders.
The system was very effective for good students. They were rewarded with deserved points and class time was not used or disrupted to discipline other students.
The point system removed pressure and allowed me to be a more positive and upbeat teacher.
I enjoyed teaching junior and senior high students because their sense of humor was usually more sophisticated. Younger students were still on literal level and I found that frustrating.
