About Valerie

I have been a teacher for over 16 years, following in the footsteps of my mother who was a teacher for 40 years. Prior to that, I substitute taught and ran my own law firm while raising my 4 children. My 2 boys and 2 girls were very good students, 2 of them becoming valedictorians, but they made me realize that there were so many children who struggled. I began giving extra help after class but again realized that some students needed more one on one guidance. When I started offering tutoring services, the response was overwhelming. I was tutoring 2 to 3 students a day every day of the week and their grades were all improving as was their confidence.

I was very loved as a teacher, as I made learning fun and interactive. We did a lot of fun labs in Science like making my class act out the parts of the digestive system or competing as team Moon versus team Mars to argue which place would be a better place to live. Math became more interesting when students would be in groups of "restaurants" and have to make a menu with actual recipes (there's the math) and pick something to make for the class. Technology became more thoughtful when the students designed posters for anti-bullying. I also ran a 6th, 7th and 8th grade STEM Fair for sustainable energy where the students came up with incredible ideas such as making tiles out of plastic bags, bicycle power, and bottle housing.

I am a very imaginative teacher and tutor and I enjoy working with all ages. I can be tough sometimes in order to make sure that the work gets done, but we will celebrate when the good grades come through!

Each student is different and has a unique way of learning. Each session is catered to their abilities and to helping the student push farther than they believe they are capable. During the school year, we will work with their current lessons, focusing on what they do not understand by doing extra lessons that will be explained in a way that they will comprehend. During the summer, I will prepare lessons, based on what will be coming up for them in the next year of school. We can focus on a problem subject such as Math, and get them ahead of the game so it will be easier for them to understand when school starts.

For students in the lower grades, I have fun ways of helping them remember lessons, games to play and focusing techniques. It won't always be about just sitting in your chair and doing work, but getting up and being a part of the lesson.

Highschool students have so much going on and they are often overwhelmed. I will help them relieve the pressure and we will get their work done. For SAT prep, we will have an SAT book to go through practice problems that I will explain and teach them how to answer.

I am an extremely patient and caring teacher who takes great pride in her students' success. Therefore, I am excellent at working with all types of students. I have had many ADHD, ADD and IEP students who are extremely smart but needed guidance on their particular way to learn. Once we found that, they have gone on to become doctors, lawyers, teachers and into many other successful career paths. I am so proud of their success! I am in it for the long haul. Some of my students I have tutored for over 8 years and have watched as they graduated college. I will always be here for them.
