About Evan
I inspire confidence in my teaching by coming to class early, and reviewing the content of my classes and the examples I will present. I used to be able to "wing it", but as I age, I find I have to work out in detail each problem I plan to present. My spelling and grammar have never been a problem for my teaching

My typical class will start with a review of the previous class' homework. If students have questions, I try to get a classmate to help find the answer. In many of my classes, I find that many students fall behind in their work. I take them aside after class and ask what issue is blocking their progress. Often it is home or work issues. If it is a problem with the subject matter, I suggest we meet at some mutually agreeable time. I next tell the class what the topic of the day will be. I explain the concepts involved and then give examples. I give the students some time to try out some problems themselves and circle around the room seeing how the students are doing. Cooperative work is encouraged but not demanded. I call the roster, noting who has been particularly late (10 or 15 minutes). This is not classwork, but I post homework assignments online. I also look for online tutorials for my students for review of the class subject matter. For instance, last term, I taught a class in math for nurses. The textbook is good for explaining the issues involved, but their application required scouring the internet for good examples of how they are applied in real life.
