About Ian
I do not believe effective swimming coaching can be reduced to giving every student the same drills and expecting identical results. Each swimmer has a different body, background, confidence level, learning style, and reason for being in the pool. My approach is therefore highly individual. I first try to understand what you can already do, where you are struggling, and what you ultimately want from swimming. From there, I select techniques and exercises that address your specific needs rather than filling the lesson with unnecessary information. A beginner might need foundational work on floating, breathing, balance, and basic coordination, while an experienced swimmer may need more focused attention on stroke efficiency, pacing, endurance, or race preparation. I adjust the challenge as you improve and continually reassess what will help you next. My experience as a swimmer informs my coaching, but your individual needs determine how that experience is applied.

I want your progress to be something you can actually feel and recognize, not simply something an instructor tells you is happening. Throughout our lessons, we revisit important skills and compare them with where you started, paying attention to improvements in comfort, technique, breathing, distance, efficiency, consistency, or confidence. For some swimmers, progress might mean swimming a full length without stopping; for others, it could mean reducing unnecessary effort, improving stroke rhythm, increasing endurance, or preparing for a longer-distance challenge. I adjust the difficulty as your ability develops, introducing new challenges when you are ready rather than following an arbitrary timetable. We can also establish short-term goals that give each session a clear direction while working toward your bigger objective. My lesson plan is therefore progressive without being rigid. I want you to leave each session knowing what improved, what comes next, and feeling motivated to continue.
