About Ian
Hi, I'm Ian, a Chemistry major at Emory University and IB graduate, specializing in tutoring Math AA HL, Chemistry HL, Biology HL, and Business SL. My connection to these subjects runs deep — I'm a USNCO Chemistry Olympiad National Finalist, and that same curiosity for understanding why things work, not just memorizing formulas, is what I bring into every session.
I founded my own tutoring website in 2025, designing lesson plans tailored to IB curriculum standards for MYP students, and before that, spent 2 years as an assistant teacher at a Korean school, helping younger students build both academic skills and confidence in a bilingual environment. Whether it's breaking down a tricky Math AA HL problem or walking through Chemistry HL lab projects, I focus on building real conceptual understanding that holds up under exam pressure — not just short-term memorization.
Outside of tutoring and coursework, I play volleyball and tennis, and I'm usually reading or cooking when I get the chance. I also play the violin, piano, and am currently playing the electric guitar in a band! I think staying active in things outside the classroom actually makes me a better teacher — it helps me keep patient and creative when creating lesson plans, and making my classes fun.

Each lesson is tailored to the student's individual needs, whether that means reinforcing foundational concepts, working through challenging problem sets, or preparing specifically for upcoming assessments and exams. Before diving into new material, I like to first understand where a student currently stands — their strengths, gaps, and goals — so that our time together is focused and efficient from the start.
For Math AA HL, sessions typically emphasize problem-solving strategy and exam technique alongside core content, since IB assessments often test application as much as raw knowledge. For Chemistry HL and Biology HL, I focus on connecting theoretical concepts to the kind of reasoning required in exam-style questions, including data analysis and practical-based reasoning. For Business SL, lessons center on case-study analysis and applying theoretical frameworks to real business scenarios.
I incorporate practice problems, past paper questions, and step-by-step walkthroughs to build both understanding and confidence. Lessons are conversational rather than lecture-style — I encourage students to ask questions, explain their thinking, and work through mistakes together, since that process is often where the deepest learning happens.
Homework or practice between sessions is tailored to reinforce what we've covered, and I regularly check in on progress to adjust our approach as needed, ensuring each student continues moving toward their goals.
