About Santiago

This year, I graduated from the University of British Columbia (UBC) with a Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.) in Integrated Engineering and a Minor in Commerce. Having attended high school in British Columbia (Grades 8–12), I am familiar with the BC curriculum and the expectations of the Canadian secondary education system. I have over 150 hours of one-on-one tutoring experience with middle and high school students, both in-person and online.

My degree in Integrated Engineering exposed me to a wide range of disciplines, including Mechanical, Electrical, Computer, Chemical, and Materials Engineering. Beyond my engineering requirements, I also completed courses in Economics, Linguistics, First-Order Logic, Accounting, Japanese, Electronics Repair, and American Sign Language.

I have been very fortunate to learn from great teachers who made education engaging and rewarding. Through those experiences, I developed a genuine passion for learning and a strong belief that learning how to learn - not just what to learn - is one of the most valuable skills a person can develop. It enables individuals to become more resourceful, adaptable, and confident both inside and outside the classroom.

At the same time, as a recent graduate, I understand one of the greatest challenges students face: feeling that they are memorizing facts and procedures without truly understanding the ideas behind them.

My teaching philosophy is simple: understand first, memorize second.

When students develop a strong conceptual foundation, they become more confident, independent, and successful long after the tutoring session ends. My goal as a tutor is to help students build lasting understanding, develop strong problem-solving and analytical thinking skills, and foster the lifelong learning habits that support academic, professional, and personal growth.

I believe that effective tutoring begins with understanding the individual student. Rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach, I tailor each lesson to the student's goals, strengths, and areas of difficulty.

My lessons typically involve:
• Identifying specific goals, challenges, and sources of frustration
• Assessing current understanding and knowledge gaps
• Adapting explanations to the student's learning style
• Working through examples together step-by-step
• Reinforcing concepts through guided practice and independent problem-solving
• Developing a plan for continued improvement between sessions

I can provide support with homework, assignments, exam preparation, regular academic support, summer review, or enrichment beyond the classroom.

Middle and high school subjects I commonly teach include:

• Mathematics Fundamentals, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus
• Science Fundamentals and Science 8–10
• Physics 11 & 12
• Chemistry 11 & 12
• Biology 11 & 12

Engineering and university-level subjects I have experience with include:

• First-Year Engineering: Differential & Integral Calculus, Statistics, Physics, Programming
• Mathematics: Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations
• Mechanical Engineering: Solid Mechanics, Fluid Dynamics, Thermodynamics
• Electrical Engineering: First-Order Circuits, Electromechanics
• Other Topics: C++, C#, Technical Writing

Lessons are available online or in person and can be adapted for students ranging from middle school through selected university-level courses.
