About Jonathan

I have been teaching undergraduates and graduates Biblical Hebrew since for over ten years. I delight in helping students master the grammar and learn to read ancient Hebrew texts. I have many years' experience reading and researching ancient Hebrew texts, including the Hebrew Bible and the Dead Sea Scrolls. I am a patient, insightful and good-humoured teacher. And I am delighted to say that it is my students themselves who have declared this over the years. Not only do students find my teaching exciting and enthusiastic, they also praise my accuracy, attention to detail and —above all— my attention to each student's individual learning needs.

For many years I have been helping people of all ages to learn at all levels, from GCSE to post graduate. It seems to me that when you are enjoying yourself, you forget that you're even learning... and that is when the real learning happens.

I have helped many students in their learning. I hope I can help you, too — not only to learn what you need to learn, but also to enjoy it.

About the lesson

For a speaker of a European language, it can be difficult to embark on learning ancient Hebrew. If you have no experience of other Semitic languages, you will find that the grammar is not comparable to anything you know. But I find that, if you persevere, a moment comes when the "penny drops" and it all starts to make sense. This moment tends to take longer to arrive for students learning ancient Hebrew than it does for students learning ancient Greek or Latin. Yet it will come. I specialise in helping students reach the point where the "penny drops." I can make the process fun and rewarding. In particular, I use colour to help students grasp difficult aspects of Hebrew grammar. And I combine oral, aural and visual elements to help the patterns sink into your mind.

I like teaching at all levels, from the introductory to the advanced. Having been a lecturer in Theology and Biblical Studies in the University of London for thirteen years, I am very happy guiding and tutoring students at any level. I can help you prepare for an examination at any level, or simply to improve your knowledge of Hebrew for your own satisfaction.
