I teach Sixth Form students for AS-level, A-level and university maths admissions tests (e.g. MAT, STEP). I have core teaching methods, as well as adapting to the needs and/or level of the student (e.g. Students applying to top universities will benefit more from stretching their problem-solving skills versus gaining confidence in the syllabus).
Core teaching:
I help students to structure their thinking around the bigger picture, which brings them a higher level of clarity when it comes to solving problems and understanding topics fully.
Maths Admissions Papers:
My focus here is less about consolidating learning on familiar topics and more on developing problem-solving thinking. I will use a combination of past papers, challenging puzzles/problems and new topics that will give them an edge over the competition.
The student will benefit most from the following:
(1) Coming to me with their sticking points
(2) Me giving them more subtle hints during sticking points, before a complete review. Pushing through difficulty is essential, not just the admissions papers, but also for university preparation.
(3) Using resources outside of the syllabus and past papers - I can help with this.
AS-level and A-level specific:
This more about learning standard methods and making them intuitive. I find it particularly beneficial to link topics together to compress a seemingly cluttered syllabus into a manageable framework. The student will benefit most from:
(1) Coming to me with their sticking points
(2) Going back over what we covered in the last session and doing lots of practice. I can provide the resources for this
