As a tutor, my approach centers on creating a comfortable and supportive learning environment that encourages active engagement. Here’s how I approach tutoring:
1. Voice-Off Method: One of the key principles I follow is the voice-off technique. This means using minimal or no verbal communication while teaching, which helps students focus on visual cues and reinforces the importance of non-verbal communication. It’s an effective method for learning American Sign Language (ASL), as it forces students to rely on their hands, facial expressions, and body language to communicate.
2. Mini-Lesson Approach: I focus on addressing specific needs or vocabulary sets in a mini-lesson format. By breaking down the lesson into small, digestible chunks, students are able to grasp concepts more effectively. For example, if a student struggles with a particular group of signs or sentence structure, I focus solely on that area in a focused, manageable lesson. This allows for clear explanations and plenty of practice.
3. Support for High School and College Students: I am particularly skilled at working with high school and college students, especially those navigating their level 1 or level 2 ASL coursework. Whether they need extra help to keep up with their classes or want to deepen their understanding of ASL, I tailor my lessons to fit their specific curriculum and needs.
