About Harry
I love math, even when it is hard and I feel like I am making no progress (well, maybe not always, but I still keep coming back). I've taken part in a lot of competitions while in high school, and helped coach my school's junior teams for regional competitions on more than one occasion. As for what I am able to help you with - preferably NCEA and years 7-13, but I can do a little more than that:
- If mathematics sometimes seems to you like nothing more than a random set of rules, I can provide perspective for why we would want to think about certain mathematical ideas (e.g., geometry, calculus) in the first place.
- Teach you to ACTUALLY understand calculus, if that's something you want to do
- Prepare you to succeed at scholarship calculus. I received an Outstanding in 2020 so I know what you need to be able to do to get there. It also introduces some new topics (i.e., conic sections).
- Anything and everything to do with competition mathematics - The University of Otago Junior Math Competition, ICAS, or region-specific mathematics competitions such as "Waimaths" here in Hamilton.
If you are interested, I can also guide you to becoming competent at Olympiad mathematics as well, in the subjects of algebra, number theory, combinatorics, and synthetic geometry. I received a Gold Medal in the New Zealand Math Olympiad in 2020 but unfortunately didn't make it any further than math camp - if you're serious about competing in the IMO my ability to help you will inevitably taper off beyond some point. Although nothing beats cold hard practice, I can source interesting problems relevant for you, nudge you in certain directions if I notice you are stuck, and help you develop intuition.

I am interested in teaching years 9-13 (possibly years 7-8 too), including NCEA and Scholarship Calculus.
My aim would be for sessions to be collaborative and with just the right amount of hands-on to keep you engaged but not overwhelmed. I can think of many ways to test your understanding for each subject, and am good at coming up with exercises appropriate to the situation.
I would start by trying to get an idea of where you are at regarding your coursework and what you feel you need the most help with. If you have a long term plan; (eg. get scholarship calculus) fantastic, but if you simply want to get better at maths I can provide plenty of direction.
I am always prepared to answer questions that aren't necessarily related to the coursework but you are still interested in, and would love it, for instance, whenever a student brought along a problem they found online but are stuck on. I also know of lots of resources to pick from that I can encourage you to look at between lessons if I think you'll benefit from them.
