About Shiven

I'm a Computer Science student at the University of Waterloo, and I learn best by building things. Programming and ML aren't just subjects I study, they're what I spend my free time on.

Some of what I've built:

• Real-time Indian Sign Language detection: a system using YOLO and LangChain that recognizes signs live.
• Peer Project: I'm the main backend developer for a volunteer mentor-mentee platform that runs on Discord and Reddit, so I know what it takes to ship code real people use.
• MedMesh: an offline emergency network over a LoRa radio mesh, built with a team at a hackathon.

Along the way I've learned that the people who get good at ML are the ones with strong fundamentals. That's why my lessons start with programming and algorithm basics and build up from there. I teach the way I wish someone had taught me: explain the "why" first, then build something real with it.

If you want to learn to code, or understand ML instead of just using it, send me a message and tell me where you're starting from.

Machine learning isn't magic. It's programming, math, and good habits stacked on a solid base. My lessons build that base first, so ML algorithms make sense when you reach them instead of feeling like a black box.

We start with the foundation.
You learn to program properly: how to break a problem down, write clean code, and debug without panicking. Then we cover the basics of algorithms, such as how data is stored, how to search and sort it, and why some solutions are fast and others fall apart at scale. Everything we build on later rests on this.

Then we build toward ML.
Once the base is solid, we move into the core ideas behind machine learning: how a model learns from data, what "training" really means, and what's happening inside algorithms like linear regression, decision trees, and neural networks. We focus on understanding why they work, not just calling a library and hoping for the best.

Everything is project-based.
Learning is the top priority, and the best way to learn is by building. We take a real project forward together, step by step, so each new concept shows up in something you're making. You finish with working code you understand, not just notes you've copied.

What you can expect:

• Programming taught from the ground up, at your pace
• Clear explanations of algorithm basics, with intuition before formulas
• A hands-on project that grows as your skills do
• ML concepts that connect back to the fundamentals you've learned
• A patient, no-judgment space to ask "why?" as often as you need

Who it's for:
Beginners who want a strong start in programming, and students who want to understand ML rather than just use it. No prior experience is needed, only curiosity.

As a University of Waterloo student, I'll teach this the way I wish I'd learned it: understand the base, build something real, and the advanced topics follow naturally.
