My teaching philosophy is based on three principles: the way I view the teaching profession or my definition of teaching and learning, the way I view my role as a teacher, and how I handle assessment and feedback.
I view learning as the acquisition of knowledge, of skills, know-how, and a better understanding of the world. For example, it is not enough to teach the formation of adjectives and other derivative processes; students should be shown how they can use such knowledge in real life situations, in their daily activities. Hence, teaching and learning should be more concrete and practical. Language courses should be geared towards oral and written production to be used in daily life. Above all, learning should have the potential for changing studentsâ lives in a significant way.
Teaching is not a one-way conversation during which I tell students what they should know. Instead, it is a discussion in which all participants must be highly and actively involved. I try as much as possible to build on learnersâ pre-existing knowledge.
My third principle is geared towards evaluation methods and the way I build on studentsâ responses to reinforce teaching and learning. I always make sure that my evaluations help students learn better and the teacher instruct better.
I am a trained language teacher with a Master of Education. I have been teaching French as second language for 20 years to secondary school and university students as well as to civil servants and general public. I have given private lessons to students and professionals for many years.
