About Simon
I have played the violin for over 40 years and have taught music privately for more than 20. I enjoy helping adults become more confident players, whether they are complete beginners, returning after a long break or looking to develop beyond their current level.
I hold a first-class BA in Music and an MMus in Composition from the University of Liverpool. I have also taught performance and media at Liverpool Hope University.
My musical background is broad. I have played in orchestras, bands and musical theatre productions, and my experience spans classical and chamber music, pop and rock, folk, jazz, improvisation, experimental music and dance music. I have toured internationally and worked on commissioned projects for organisations including BBC Radio, FACT and the Southbank Centre.
This breadth feeds directly into my teaching. I am comfortable helping students explore different kinds of music rather than expecting everyone to follow the same classical route. At the same time, I place a strong emphasis on technique, sound production and musical understanding, so students develop skills they can apply across whatever they want to play.
What I enjoy most about teaching is the moment when something begins to click, whether that is producing a better sound, understanding a difficult rhythm or finally feeling comfortable with a piece of music.

My violin lessons are relaxed, supportive and shaped around what each student actually wants to achieve. I teach adults from complete beginner to advanced level, including people returning to the violin after a long break or looking for a more thoughtful and creative approach to their playing.
Lessons are usually 45 minutes or one hour. Many adult beginners find that 45 minutes gives them enough time to concentrate well and make steady progress, while others prefer a full hour. We can choose whichever format suits you best.
For complete beginners, I focus carefully on technique from the start, especially bowing. The bow is how you make the sound, and the sooner you can produce a clear, satisfying tone, the more rewarding and enjoyable playing becomes. We also work on posture, rhythm, intonation and musical expression while getting you playing real music as soon as possible.
For more experienced players, we usually begin with music you are genuinely interested in, alongside any technical difficulties or particular areas you want to develop. Lessons are tailored to your experience, interests, learning style and confidence. I have taught students interested in classical music, folk, jazz, pop, musicals, improvisation and even folk metal. Music theory, composition and ear training can also be included where they support your playing.
My aim is to help you develop a reliable technique, a strong and expressive sound, and the confidence to make your own musical decisions. Mistakes are treated as a useful part of learning, and lessons are a space where you can experiment, ask questions and work things out without feeling judged.
I have more than 20 years’ teaching experience and have played the violin for over 40 years. I hold a first-class BA in Music and an MMus in Composition from the University of Liverpool, and I have also taught at Liverpool Hope University.
Lessons are available face to face in Liverpool and online through Zoom.

I've been having violin lessons with Simon for a few years now and have found his lessons to be really helpful and enjoyable. His lessons have been tailored to me and my goals. He is patient and supportive and explains techniques well. I would recommend him to anyone looking for a violin tutor!
Simon has been my violin teacher for the last several years. What I like about his teaching style is that he’s very flexible and really tailors his lessons to what your goals and interests are instead of using a one-size-fits-all approach, which I especially appreciate as an adult learner. At the same time, he doesn’t gloss over any of the sometimes boring but necessary nuts-and-bolts foundational stuff that ultimately is what really improves your playing. I’m really happy with my progress so far and I put a lot of that down to Simon’s guidance. He’s always encouraging and makes sure you understand a new concept he’s introduced before moving on. He’s always been very dependable, on time and doesn’t mess you around. And he’s a friendly, easygoing kinda guy that puts you at ease from the start. I wouldn’t hesitate recommending Simon as a teacher.
I have worked with Simon for many years periodically, through collaborative creative projects, community events and creative sessions.
