About Katelynn
My Musical Background
I started playing violin at the age of 8, and it changed my life. Coming from a poor family, I had to street perform and work hard to raise money for lessons. Despite the challenges, it was all worth it due to the experiences and the way music had shaped my life.
From 2013-2017, I was a member of the Mountain Top Strings Orchestra (MTSO) in Big Bear, CA. In that orchestra, I had the opportunity to perform in two European tours (2013 & 2016) and perform in the world famous Carnegie Hall (2017).
After my time with MTSO had concluded, I was accepted into California Baptist University (CBU). I became a member of the University Choir and Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Opera Orchestra, and Symphony Orchestra. Through these groups, we had opportunities to travel and record music for Lifeway Worship. This is also when I started my teaching career.
I started teaching through the Riverside Arts Academy. I started as a volunteer my freshman year, but was hired by my sophomore year. I taught beginner and intermediate violin students until I graduated CBU 5 years later with a Bachelor’s in Music Education: Cum Laude.
After graduation, I was hired as a teacher assistant for my old director at Mountain Top Strings. I hope to continue growing the number of students that I have to accomplish my goal of using music as a tool to help others.

Why Teach Music?
My teaching philosophy is that music is a gift that should be available to anyone who needs or desires it. It has saved my life, brought opportunities, and has truly helped shape who I am. Why keep something like that to myself when I can provide it to others?
What my classes entail:
To improve musicianship, I primarily use teaching techniques from the Suzuki method.
A typical lesson will start with scales and arpeggios to warm up. This allows for students to listen to their intonation and tone quality.
If we have a new piece, I will talk about the history of the piece and have students listen to the piece before even picking up their instrument. Oftentimes, I will have students analyze their music and tell me what certain markings or words mean. I will play through the piece and then have the student try. If need be, I will demonstrate certain articulations and techniques before having the student imitate me. If certain sections need to be fixed or repeated, I will do call and response with the student (adjusting tempo as needed).
Intonation is practiced through listening, singing, and then playing. Rhythm is practiced through listening, clapping, counting, and playing.
Why should I be your tutor?
My mission for my classes is to not only teach to improve one's skills and overall musicianship, but to help the student discover and improve as a whole. I hope to be a part of your journey and just want to help you reach your full potential.
