About Andersen

I am a classically trained violinist with years of experience in performance and teaching, dedicated to helping students develop both technical confidence and artistic expression. My musical journey has taken me to prestigious stages, including the Soka Performing Arts Center, Segerstrom Center for the Arts, and Carnegie Hall, where I’ve had the honor of performing as part of orchestral and chamber ensembles. These experiences have deepened my appreciation for musical collaboration, discipline, and the art of storytelling through sound. As a tutor, I bring that same level of professionalism and passion to every lesson. I work closely with each student to build a strong technical foundation, nurture their musicality, and foster a lifelong passion for the violin, whether they are just starting or preparing for advanced auditions.

My Approach as a Violin Tutor

My teaching philosophy centers on building strong technical foundations while nurturing a deep, personal connection to music. I tailor my instruction to the unique strengths and learning style of each student, ensuring they develop both the skill and confidence to express themselves musically.

Teaching Method & Techniques
I focus on three pillars:

Technique – Emphasis on posture, bow hold, intonation, and left-hand agility. I incorporate etudes (e.g., Wohlfahrt, Kreutzer) and scales to reinforce control and precision.

Musicality – From early stages, I guide students in phrasing, dynamics, and emotional interpretation. I often use singing and guided listening to develop their ear and sense of expression.

Mindful Practice – I teach students how to practice efficiently: breaking down difficult passages, using slow practice, and applying visualization or rhythmic variation.

Typical Lesson Plan
Each lesson is customized, but a typical 45- to 60-minute session includes:

Warm-up (5–10 min): Scales, arpeggios, or shifting exercises

Technical work (10–15 min): Etudes or exercises targeting current challenges

Repertoire (20–30 min): Pieces from Suzuki, classical repertoire, or contemporary music based on the student’s level and goals

Feedback & Goal Setting (5–10 min): Reflection on progress and assignments for the week

What Sets Me Apart
I combine a strong classical training with an empathetic, student-centered approach. I am particularly attentive to mental blocks and performance anxiety—helping students develop not just technical skill, but also resilience and joy in playing. I also integrate music theory, ear training, and historical context into lessons when appropriate, giving students a fuller understanding of the music they play.

Additionally, I use a combination of traditional methods (like Suzuki and Galamian) and modern tools (video recording, digital apps for rhythm/tuning) to keep lessons engaging and relevant.

Who I Teach
I work with:

Beginners to intermediate students (ages 7+)

Adult learners and returning players

High school students preparing for auditions or youth orchestras

College students seeking supplemental instruction or chamber coaching

Whether a student is pursuing music seriously or simply playing for personal enrichment, I adapt my teaching to support their individual goals and growth.
