About Angel

About Mrs. Thompson: Hello, I have been using the language of sign since my youth with friends who are deaf and a distant family member. I have been privileged to have been teaching ASL since 1987, and in 1990 she began teaching ASL and Deaf Culture as an adjunct professor at Grace College in Winona Lake, Indiana. She is also fluent in French Sign Language, and for 4 years lived on the Island of Guadeloupe in the F.W.I where she taught FSL and worked with the Deaf Youth Community. One of my most favorite memories have been as a counselor at Deaf Camp as well as working with students in Guadeloupe. When I visited the school I noticed that no one signed. The teachers would face the board and talk. You could see they all were so lost. Once I made a connection with signing their language they began coming to my house after school to play checkers and just talk. I have many other stories that I would love to share as you learn this language. I will share when I went back to visit I was told a young man was at the gate asking for me. It had been 2 years since I had been on the island. It was one of the students, now a man. We embraced and he began to talk and share. I stopped him and realized he was signing ASL. He looked at me and said, "I learned ASL so if you came again. could talk to you in your language. You learned mine to talk to me and I wanted to meet you in your language." I currently teach through the day at a local Charter School in Myrtle Beach, where I have been teaching Music and ASL for 7 years.

About the lesson

Course Overview: ASL 1 is a 23 unit beginner course into the introduction of American Sign Language and Deaf Culture. The goal is to keep voices off, eyes open as we use and practice our visual skills to gain a basic means of communication into the Deaf Culture. If you truly put effort into not just "knowing the signs", but practice and utilize them in conversation, and understanding the culture, at the end of this course you would be able to have a basic conversation within the Deaf Community, and it truly is one of the most beautiful communities in the world. Here is what you can expect: Introduction to ASL: History and Importance Overview of ASL origins and significance in Deaf culture Basics of ASL Grammar: Sentence Structure and Word Order Understanding how ASL differs from English in structure ASL Alphabet and Fingerspelling Learning the manual alphabet and practicing fingerspelling skills ASL Numbers and Time Expressions Expressing numbers and discussing time in ASL Common ASL Greetings and Phrases Basic conversational phrases and greetings in ASL ASL Pronouns and Demonstratives Using ASL pronouns and demonstrative signs Asking Questions in ASL Formulating questions using appropriate facial expressions and syntax Describing People and Things in ASL Using classifiers and descriptive signs to convey information ASL Vocabulary: Colors and Shapes Learning signs for colors and shapes in ASL Family and Relationships in ASL Discussing family dynamics and relationships using ASL signs Everyday Activities and Routines in ASL Describing daily routines and activities in ASL ASL Vocabulary: Food and Drink Learning signs related to food, drinks, and dining Directions and Locations in ASL Understanding how to give and receive directions in ASL Emergency Signs and Safety Phrases in ASL Learning essential signs for emergencies and safety situations ASL Expressions of Emotions and Feelings Expressing emotions and feelings through ASL signs Weather and Seasons in ASL Discussing weather conditions and seasons using ASL signs ASL Vocabulary: Animals and Nature Learning signs related to animals and the natural world ASL Signs for Transportation and Travel Discussing transportation modes and travel-related signs in ASL Health and Medical Signs in ASL Learning signs for medical conditions, symptoms, and health-related terms ASL Vocabulary: Professions and Jobs Learning signs for different professions and job-related terms Leisure Activities and Hobbies in ASL Discussing hobbies, interests, and leisure activities using ASL signs Cultural Insights and Deaf Community Etiquette Understanding cultural norms and etiquette within the Deaf community Review and Practice Sessions Reviewing learned material and practicing ASL skills through interactive sessions

This first lesson offered with Angel will allow you to get to know each other and clearly specify your needs for your next lessons.

Details

Courses will be in the evenings after 6pm. Saturdays after 1pm. You will be able to set a time with me for your days you wish to meet. Each lesson will be 1 hour. Payment can be made over Venmo or even Cash App. I look forward to working with you and mentoring your way into a beautiful language.
