Depending on the age group, I would approach my classes differently. I don't like spending a lot of class time guiding the student finishing problems as that can be done in their own time. Instead, I take advantage on class time by teaching concepts that are harder to understand on their own, and working through an example to ensure they fully understand it. I provide effective homework problems that vary from easy (basic understanding) to more challenging problems that are more likely to be seen on competitions of application/thinking questions in school tests.
In computer science, the best way by learning is simply coding. This being said, I will customize practice problems tailored to the students' needs, and throughout my classes I will guide students on developing a project that can be put on their resume or application.
As a student currently studying at Waterloo, I am well aware of the knowledge that would be beneficial in learning if pursuing a career in CS/Math.
I am currently a 2nd year Computer Science student studying at the University of Waterloo. I have worked as a software developer for a startup previously, and will be on co-op as a software engineer this coming Jan-Apr. I have been a private and group tutor through my grade 11-12 years in high school, tutoring a wide range of topics including math and computer science for students in elementary and high school. I have written various math and computing competitions (and been successful), and received an offer to both Waterloo Software Engineering and Computer Science.
Jolene has proven herself to be extremely patient, and really tailors all her classes to my daughter's needs! She is amazing at what she teaches, and it is clear that she really cares. Keep up the great work, Jolene :)
