About Ken
I am a registered architect in Australia, design leader, university teacher and academic coordinator with more than 15 years of professional experience in architecture, design and team leadership.
I have worked at the intersection of professional practice and design education, helping students develop not only stronger projects, but stronger ways of thinking.
My teaching focuses on helping each student understand their own design process, identify what is holding their work back, and develop clear strategies to improve it. I give precise, individualised and actionable feedback rather than generic advice.
My professional experience allows me to teach architecture from both an academic and real-world perspective. I help students understand how strong designers think, communicate, develop ideas and make decisions under real project constraints.
I am particularly interested in helping students who want to push beyond simply meeting assignment criteria and develop work that is thoughtful, ambitious and distinctive.
What my students say:
“I thoroughly enjoyed Ken Chan’s course. His teaching style was engaging and effective, making complex concepts easy to understand.”
“Overly satisfied with the way he teaches, engages, stimulates and helps push boundaries with every major task.”
“Ken is an amazing teacher that has helped me think beyond my usual understanding of architecture.”
“His ability to analyse students is impressive. His advice was always precise and based on the individual.”
“He has always pushed me to go beyond what is required from the assignments, which made the subject more enjoyable to learn.”
“Ken is clearly very knowledgeable in architecture and is interested in seeing us succeed beyond the course.”
“I received detailed and precise feedback for every submission and draft. This made me go beyond my limits and improve.”
“Ken is the best teacher of the college.”

I teach a structured and highly effective approach to architectural and design thinking.
Rather than simply telling you whether a design is good or bad, I help you understand why it works, where it can improve, and what your next design move should be.
I have developed my own methodology, the Spatial Thinking Framework, which helps students build a clearer, stronger and more efficient design process.
Depending on your goals, lessons can include:
- Architecture studio tutoring and project development
- Design concept development
- Design process and creative strategy
- Critiques of current studio projects
- Portfolio development
- Architectural presentations and storytelling
- Spatial thinking and composition
- Drawing, diagrams and visual communication
- Improving weak or unresolved projects
- Preparing for university architecture study
- Professional design thinking and workflow
- Developing a distinctive personal design approach
My teaching is highly individualised. We start with your current work, identify the most important opportunities for improvement, and develop practical next steps.
For architecture, design and interior design students, I can work alongside your studio projects throughout the semester, providing an additional layer of critique, direction and professional insight.
For school students considering architecture or design, I can help you develop the visual, conceptual and spatial thinking skills needed to prepare for university-level study.
My aim is not simply to help you complete an assignment. It is to help you become a stronger designer.
Choose how you learn
You can choose between 1:1 Architecture & Design Coaching or join one of our Mini Studio online classes.
1:1 Coaching is tailored around your goals, current projects and level of experience. Coaching can be weekly, biweekly, or more intensive depending on your needs, particularly around studio submissions, portfolios or major design milestones.
Mini Studio offers a small online studio environment where students can develop their projects through ongoing critique, discussion and structured feedback. It brings some of the benefits of a university design studio into a focused online setting, while also allowing students to learn from how others approach design problems.
Coaching frequency and pricing can be adjusted depending on the package and level of support required.
Review
All of our reviews are collected by us and are 100% reliable. They correspond to a real experience lived by the teacher's students.
Perfect! Ken is very talented and creative, and what stands out to me is how quickly he can understand my ideas and give me a clear direction. I really appreciate how well he understands the different stages of a student’s education and learning journey. His feedback is thoughtful, creative and tailored to where I am as a designer/future architect. I found the tutoring class is inspiring and very helpful.

Ken taught me everything I know about architecture and so many things about life. I met him at the college when I first started studying architecture, and I still design/study based on his teaching. His students, including myself, still talk about how fortunate we were to have him as a teacher in early stages of our architectural journeys.
Ken was my teacher when I was pursuing architecture at the University of Technology Sydney. He is a teacher with an extensive and very deep understanding of architecture, design, and everyday life, more so than any teacher I have met throughout my 4 years of study. His teaching methods far exceed the standard of architecture that is taught in academia, both in theoretical and practical application, with a very deep connection to art and beauty as well. He has taught me many things, including the importance of a concept, how to create something from nothing, observing, abstracting, and translating to create a design that holds intense value. From basic principles to expert knowledge, Ken is there to facilitate you throughout your journey. A recurring lesson that he taught me was the importance of honesty and looseness in architecture, and the impact it holds to shape meaningful design.
Ken taught me in my first year of architecture school and has been the only tutor to make a real impact on my education. Ken's teaching is in-depth and provides insight into things where many other tutors lack. He has consistently helped develop my skills and thinking across many projects and is the single person I attribute my academic success to.
"He enriched our class time by sharing his additional knowledge and experiences related to the course material, making the sessions more meaningful and comprehensive. He also provided continuous feedback and dedication to students both during and outside of class. His feedback was always insightful and significant. One regret I have is that I didn't manage my time well enough to receive his feedback on my assignments. His feedback was that valuable, and I regret not utilising it more. Besides the course content, he offered a lot of advice and guidance on the attitudes that architecture students should have. This advice changed my approach to the course and allowed me to engage with it more passionately. Meeting him as the professor for Spatial Communication was a stroke of luck, and he has changed many things for the better. Thank you."
