About Silvio

WHY I TEACH:
One thing I love more than learning is spreading my knowledge. Since primary school, I can remember helping my peers and being the go-to person for help throughout my school career. When I was 15 I was inspired to start teaching my classmates in group and 1-on-1 online sessions in preparation for our GCSEs, since then I've had the pleasure to continue teaching students of different levels and ages and seeing them progress.

MY EXPERIENCE:
After 200+ teaching hours, I've gotten used to hearing that I "explain it better than the teachers" and I've found success with many students at different ages and levels. One of my favourite days the year is GCSE results day, when my students tell me how happy they are with their results. Being a UCL student myself, I've found that the barrier between tutor and tutee is broken and students feel comfortable and relaxed, leading to them being more engaged. By building good relationships with my students, I get an understanding of what their own style of learning is and can adapt accordingly. That way I can ensure that any concepts are fully understood by any type of student.

About the lesson

As mentioned, I see value in building a good relationship with the student to understand and utilise their strengths and learning style, which is easier for me since the age barrier is broken. My methodology consists of a 3-step process for each topic.

STEP 1: UNDERSTAND When I explain any concept, method or formula, I break it down to its most fundamental parts to cultivate a deep understanding rather than just memorisation. Since being active is crucial for learning, I encourage student involvement in figuring things out before I tell them everything.

STEP 2: APPLY By doing guided practise questions, students can now practise their problem solving skills and further develop their understanding by actively using what they learned in Step 1.

STEP 3: REVISE Once we move on to another topic I will regularly bring up some older topics as a starter to maintain the knowledge that they already have. We can then determine whether we need to revisit the topic in more detail or if they feel confident to move on.

Perfect! I had tutoring from October through to May, and in that time my tutor helped me make huge progress in maths. When I first started, I was working at Foundation level and achieved a grade 4, but by the end I was studying Higher Maths and achieved my target grade 6 – something I couldn’t have done without his support.

What I really appreciated was his teaching style. He never just gave me the answers; instead, he made sure I thought about the problem and worked it out myself. This really built my confidence and understanding. When he explained a topic, he didn’t just show how to do it – he explained why it works that way, which made things much clearer.

He was always very patient, which made it much easier to learn, and he was well organised too. He kept track of my strengths and weaknesses and made sure we worked on the areas I struggled with most, while still reinforcing what I was already good at. The lessons were always tailored to my level and my goals, with my target grade in mind at all times.

Overall, he was an excellent tutor – supportive, patient, and effective. Thanks to him, I not only reached my target grade but also gained a much better understanding of maths along the way. He helped me achieve my goal of going to my dream 6th form and being able to study Economics.
