About Grant
I just returned to DC in 2024, but also lived here from 2013 to 2022. I am originally from New Jersey, and I graduated in 2013 with a B.S. Mathematics from Bucknell University in Pennsylvania. While an undergraduate, I tutored calculus and physics.
After graduation, I began working as a nuclear engineer in DC. While in DC, I took night classes online and got a M.E. Nuclear Engineering. Also while in DC, I started tutoring math through a non-profit organization offering after-school tutoring to struggling inner-city kids, ages 7-18.
I am back in DC, and looking forward to having fun tutoring here! I enjoy communicating genuinely, and I believe in a non-robotic approach to STEM learning.

Lesson plans will be built around the goals of the client. Common target areas are 1) mathematical understanding and comfort, 2) test preparation, and 3) deeper understanding to support confidence, independence, and strength.
Review of material, essentially me teaching the material as a tutor, provides a number of benefits to understanding, comfort, and ability. Many students engage better in a one-on-one setting, and access the concepts better when someone is talking directly with them. Also, this one-on-one dynamic allows me to see where a student is struggling and to present ideas in different ways, in real time.
Tailored practice and drills are great to prepare for exams. Prompt feedback and personal coaching on mistakes is hands down the best way to improve. Having a tutor to encourage and give practice tests is also a good way to make sure the specific goal doesn't get lost under stress and anxious study spirals.
Encouraging, playful and curious, sometimes strict, but never harsh-- and sometimes a break is needed too. I am not going to try to sell the idea that "math is fun". It can be (ish), but I won't be trying to force that message. I hope that the experience is fun. I don't want math tutoring to be drudgery. I want to build an environment where the student is present, awake, and having fun or feeling accomplished for their effort. This is the environment where math can be learned better.
