About Kevin
Kevin McEwen is an educator, cultural folklorist, and arts leader whose work bridges dance education, community engagement, and the preservation of African Diaspora traditions. He serves as Executive Director of the Kofago Institute, a nonprofit dedicated to cultural education, performance, and research, and is also a lecturer in dance at Lehman College and Queensborough Community College. With nearly three decades of experience as a teacher, consultant, and project manager, Kevin has guided students of all ages through the transformative power of the arts. His classes emphasize dance as both technique and cultural storytelling, highlighting traditions from Africa, the Caribbean, and the Americas. Under his leadership, the Kofago Dance Ensemble has grown into an internationally recognized company, touring Senegal and cultivating programs such as the Kofago Taraji youth ensemble. Kevin’s teaching and artistic practice are driven by a commitment to equity, community empowerment, and nurturing the next generation of artists. His vision is rooted in creating spaces where students can thrive, connect with heritage, and use the arts as a pathway to self-expression and social change.

My lessons are rooted in the arts and culture of the African Diaspora, using dance as both an educational tool and a cultural bridge. Through movement, rhythm, and storytelling, I guide students to explore traditions of Africa, the Caribbean, and the Americas, helping them connect history to lived experience. Each class emphasizes technique, cultural context, and creative expression, fostering respect for heritage while building confidence, discipline, and artistry. By blending education with embodiment, my lessons create spaces where students not only learn dance but also deepen their understanding of identity, resilience, and the global impact of African diasporic culture.
