About the lesson

My name is Matthew, and I believe the best way to improve at chess is by understanding ideas rather than memorizing moves. As a 2400-rated Chess.com player with seven years of playing experience, I tailor every lesson to the student's current level, goals, and learning style.

A typical lesson begins by reviewing one or two of the student's recent games to identify recurring strengths and mistakes. From there, we focus on a specific topic such as tactical patterns, opening principles, positional play, calculation, endgames, or time management. Each lesson includes practical exercises and opportunities to apply what we've covered in real positions, ensuring the concepts become second nature.

My teaching style is interactive and patient. I encourage students to explain their thought process before I provide feedback, helping them develop strong decision-making skills instead of relying on memorization. After each lesson, I provide practice recommendations and clear goals so students know exactly what to work on before our next session.

What sets me apart is my emphasis on practical improvement. Rather than overwhelming students with theory, I focus on the mistakes that have the biggest impact on their games. My lessons are structured, engaging, and designed to produce measurable progress.
