About Caleb

I’m a professional graphic designer with over 20 years of experience and more than 15 years as a 3D artist. My passion for the visual arts drives me to take on each project as a new creative challenge. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design and discovered my enthusiasm for 3D design through Blender, which I’ve used extensively in both personal and professional work. Blender remains my preferred tool for its versatility, accessibility, and growing presence across industries. In recent years, I’ve expanded into 3D printing—guiding designs from concept to finished product. I look forward to sharing my knowledge and passion for 3D art and design with other aspiring creators.

  • 1. What first drew you to the world of design and 3D creation, and how has the industry evolved since you started?

I have always loved art. In high school, my focus was mostly on drawing with colored pencils, markers, and eventually pen and ink. At that point, computers hadn't moved much past MS Paint, so computer graphics weren't a particularly attractive medium until Toy Story came out. I remember watching that and being amazed at the worlds that could be created. The methods looked simple on the surface, but I later discovered just how much work it took to make things look clean and professional - and that is exactly where the art of 3D presented itself.

The industry has exploded in terms of the tools available and the results that can be produced, but one crucial aspect of 3D modeling, design, animation, and now even printing remains the same: there has to be thought behind it. There needs to be a story, even for something as simple as a functional part that a student wishes to design. There is a purpose and a reason for the need to create. Even with all the modern tools and shortcuts adapted to speed up the 3D workflow, it still pays to know the basic skills of 3D creation, topology, and what you might call the foundational theory of 3D. Bridging that gap in understanding is exactly what I aim to do for my students.
  • 2. What is unique to your methods of teaching your speciality?

I always start by asking my students about their experience level with the tools they are trying to learn. Normally, by the time they reach me, they have already exhausted the resources they found on YouTube. Their next attempt is usually some form of AI - whether ChatGPT, Meshy, Tripo3D, or another tool - that promises professional results but delivers something entirely different. I’m the one they contact when they are ready to learn how to model or design the correct way.

I provide the context and fundamental information that YouTube tutorials often gloss over for the sake of clicks and ad revenue. Furthermore, I don’t waste a student's valuable time explaining 100% of a software program's operations when they only need 47% of it to achieve their specific goals. I teach them how to model what they want, using the most efficient methods tailored directly to their objectives.
  • 3. Modeling for on screen is very different from modeling for a physical printer. What are the golden rules of designing a model meant for real-world fabrication?

I always make it a point to ask students at the very beginning: "What is your end goal? What is the purpose of this creation?" If it’s a physical product, is the 3D print the final version itself, or simply a template piece for a mold or fiberglass shell? If it’s for digital use, will it be used for animation, or for still-image production and compositing? The final intention drastically affects the method by which the model must be created. Whether a piece is functional or purely decorative dictates the best approach for orientation, structural integrity, and print positioning.
  • 4. When a 3D print fails due to a modeling error, what is usually the culprit, and how do you teach students to troubleshoot their geometry?

Many times, students will run into failed prints. This is where I explain that even though modern printers are touted as being incredibly advanced and sophisticated - which is true - 3D modeling and printing is still an art at its core. There is real engineering involved; you have to consider print orientation and recognize that slicer settings might need to change drastically from one project to the next. Having an intimate knowledge of your model - from understanding its angles and flat surfaces to identifying thin or physically compromised areas - is incredibly valuable. That awareness often means the difference between a successful print and a failure.
  • 5. In branding and multimedia, what makes a graphic asset truly "functional" rather than just visually appealing?

Anyone in today’s design community can create a pretty picture, but what is increasingly missing is the storytelling. Storytelling gives an image life; it provides a background and a narrative that viewers naturally take an interest in, whether it's an illustration, an ad, or a flyer. Before stock photography and AI became the default quick fixes for fast turnarounds, art and design were deeply thoughtful. A brand's identity was carefully considered and researched. It has become a bit of a lost art, and that purposeful storytelling is exactly what I seek to help 2D artists either learn firsthand or rediscover.
  • 6. How do you stay adaptable with design tools and software changes without losing focus on core design principles?

Art and design are naturally meant to evolve and change. That doesn’t mean that previous forms of design and artistic style should be forgotten; rather, they become a source of inspiration and reference for future iterations. The tools people used to design centuries ago may have been updated and replaced, but they aren't forgotten. The core principles of design have always existed and always will. Just because we switched to mouse controllers and graphics tablets doesn’t make paintbrushes ancient or useless. You can still heavily benefit from understanding the principles of painting with oils and acrylics and applying those exact concepts to digital painting. There is still a lot to be said about the relationship between tangible media and RGB pixels.
  • 7. Design software can be incredibly overwhelming for beginners. How do you keep students from burning out in the first few weeks?

Within our very first session, I work with the student to establish realistic expectations. Many of my students come to me having either never used the application at all, or having used it with immense frustration due to incomplete instruction from YouTube, ChatGPT, or other AI resources. Short-form tutorials are often designed for engagement rather than education, and they almost always lack the context necessary for what the student actually wants to create.

Before I provide any instruction, I try to directly address their specific questions, frustrations, points of confusion, and desired outcomes. This ensures the curriculum is centered entirely around them and their needs. Art and design shouldn't be a frustrating struggle; it should be an enjoyable process that rewards the creator for their effort.
  • 8. How do you tailor your lessons for a hobbyist maker versus a professional looking to upscale their career portfolio?

As someone who experienced this myself, I always wanted to model very specific things, yet I could never find tutorials for them online. The available videos were always very high-level and missed the underlying context that I felt was crucial to understanding 3D modeling. I learned many things the hard way, and my goal is to help my students avoid that same friction. Whether they are a hobbyist or a professional, most students just want to learn how to accomplish their specific goal - not memorize an entire software package or an arbitrary process. That is where I come in: I help them clarify their objective and then teach them exactly what is necessary to accomplish it.
