About Anthony

Hello!

My name is Professor Anthony Melita. Ask around, I'm probably one of the easiest going professors on campus. I know that history is not exactly the most popular or stimulating subject. "History is just not my thing," according to Random Student. I have no illusions that many of you will share my passion for the historical past, but if I can somehow get you to appreciate the past it's a victory.

History is miss-taught as a laundry list of names and dates we must remember. This is WRONG!! Dates and names serve a point, but they are not THE point. History brims with the beautiful agonies of life, which of course, sounds like a flat contradiction..."beautiful agony". Yet history is about exploring the complexities of human nature which is at times agonizing and beautiful. Hopefully by now you’re vaguely interested.

I am wild about history! It's not a profession but way of life that I take seriously. I graduated in mid-2016 with a master’s in history from American Military University. I am equally wild about teaching and illustrate this passion with a rather expressive enthusiasm. I also own and operate a small historical consulting firm. Through this company, I have consulted numerous agencies including the USO, National Park Services, Fox News, documentary films, as well as various federal and state-level organizations.

My teaching motto: "The authority of those who teach is often an obstacle to those who want to learn." What does that mean? The ego of those who teach hurts our ability to learn and express knowledge. It means that I don’t know more than you. I just know different things than you. It means that my desire to be right or ego will ever impede your ability to learn.

My hope is to inspire students to appreciate history and understand its relevance to current national and global events. My lessons are for active learning, offering a student-centered demonstrating the link between past and present.

Like people, history is repulsive, sometimes beautiful, but always complex. History was built by the dead and the dead keep it. Why? They keep it for the living. Historians speak for the dead, therapists we are for those long silent and seldom recollected. We the lone flame standing vigil in a world that does not care. I am the keeper of memories and lives spent. If you could feel what I feel, see what I see, and know what I know, you would conclude that history SHOULD be our most cherished subject, and you would lament with me that it is not. This regret shrieks through time. Lucius Annaeus Seneca, a first-century AD Roman philosopher once quipped that without a past...

"What then? Shall I not follow in the footsteps of my predecessors? I shall indeed use the old road, but if I find one that makes a shorter cut and is smoother to travel, I shall open the new road. Men who have made these discoveries before us are not our masters, but our guides. Truth lies open for all; it has not yet been monopolized. And there is plenty of it left even for posterity to discover."

Had it not been for history, the narration of lives lived and lives spent, we would never be fully conscious of ourselves. We would never know what it is to be for better or worse...fully human. What is history? It is you, it is I, it is everything, it is life.

Maybe Aldous Huxley was right when he lamented, "That men do not learn very much from the lessons of history is the most important of all the lessons of history."
